2009-04-15: LOGIN Conference Explores Controversial Issues with Formal Debates
Now included among the dozens of sessions, panels, and roundtables is a series of three formal debates covering issues of secondary markets, ownership of virtual property, and the thorny issue of scripting by game designers. Traditional panels and lectures excel in delivering a range of opinions and a single focused viewpoint respectively. However, a debate presents attendees a high-resolution set of contrasting views that can challenge or reinforce their opinions in ways no other presentation format can.
Each debate is 60 minutes long and uses an abbreviated version of the National Forensics League’s policy debate format. This format gives speakers the freedom to define the direction and shape of the debate, but also provides it with structure and purpose. The debate is framed by a resolution: a formal statement of intent that one speaker will affirm and the other will negate. The resolution is intended to be divisive, worded in such a way that a clear position for or against it can be made. The ultimate goal is to educate the audience on the depth of popular issues; the take-away is a laundry list of thought provoking opinions that will get people interested in and talking about solutions to these development problems long after the conference.

2009-03-18: Jesse Schell to Enlighten LOGIN Conference Attendees as Keynote Speaker
Evergreen Events is delighted to announce the Thursday, May 14th keynote speaker for the 2009 LOGIN Conference. Jesse Schell, the accomplished Professor of Entertainment Technology at Carnegie Mellon University and CEO of Schell Games, will be delivering a lunch keynote address explaining the complicated relationship between interactive entertainment, violence, culture and sociology. The 2009 LOGIN Conference will be held May 11th-14th 2009 in Seattle, Washington at the fantastic Seattle Marriott Waterfront Hotel, as an innovative event designed to facilitate education, networking, and entertainment for the leaders of the business and development online game industry.
In his keynote, "Make Games Not War", Mr. Schell will discuss how "it is very possible that widespread online games are changing people, and therefore, society, in subtle ways. But how? Will the constant playing of war games train us all to be killers, or will the cooperation these games require break down cultural barriers, and teach us to get along with strangers? Or both? This talk examines the paradoxical futures that online gaming may bring us, and makes some suggestions about how to use them to save humanity from itself."
"Jesse Schell represents the kind of unique voice we enjoy bringing to attendees at LOGIN. He has one foot set in academia and another set in game development, a mix of experience that keeps his point of view fresh and ahead of the curve. We have no doubt this keynote address will be remembered for years to come as a high standard in excellence and insight," proclaimed Cynthia Freese, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Evergreen Events.
